WASHINGTON — The Federal Transit Administration will provide $100.3 million in funding to support public transit systems in host cities for this summer’s World Cup soccer tournament, the agency announced Tuesday (March 3).
The money will support planning, capital, and operating expenses for matches and related events; will be apportioned according to a formula involving stadium capacity and the number of games in each city; and allows for the federal government to provide 100% of the funding, with no local match required.
Eleven areas will receive funding ranging from $8.4 million to $10.44 million. The full list is available here. The money was made available through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026, which reallocated previously unspent money from four other transit programs: the Clean Fuels Grant Program, Job Access and Reverse Commute Formula Grants, the New Freedom program for transportation of people with disabilities, and Rural Transportation Accessibility Incentive Program.
“This funding is about more than moving fans — it’s about preparing our communities to host the largest sporting event in history and ensuring the world sees America at its best,” Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup 2026, said in a press release. “These investments will help create lasting memories for visitors and residents alike, and reinforce our commitment to safety, hospitality, and operational excellence.”
