ESSEX, Mont. — The former Izaak Walton Inn is up for sale for $18 million.

A real estate website says the recently closed LOGE Glacier hotel on 89.87 acres adjacent to BNSF’s main line in Essex, and just outside Glacier National Park, offers an “extraordinary, once-in-a-generation opportunity to own a legendary piece of Montana heritage.” It notes recent renovations including those to rooms, kitchen, bar, restaurant, boilers, and heaters.

“The inn is also widely celebrated among rail enthusiasts (‘railfans’) for its unparalleled front-row views of passing trains along one of the most scenic rail routes in North America,” the listing says.

The inn closed earlier this month as part of significant financial distress that shut down the entire LOGE chain of outdoors-oriented properties [see “Former Izaak Walton Inn faces closure …,” Trains.com, Feb. 15, 2026], reportedly because of details of some transactions hidden by its former CEO.

The inn, opened by the Great Northern Railway in 1939, was purchased by LOGE for $13.5 million December 2022, and reopened after remodeling in September 2024. The Flathead Beacon reported last month that LOGE, its CEO, and another party were sued last October for defaulting on two loans totaling $9.4 million. The plaintiff, Stockman Bank, has asked for the property to be sold at a sheriff’s sale to recover the debt amount.

A platform adjacent to the inn continues to serve as a stop for Amtrak’s Empire Builder.
