CHICAGO — Metra service on the Milwaukee North, Milwaukee West, and North Central lines was disrupted for about two hours during the evening rush on Wednesday (Aug. 27, 2025) by a minor derailment. Service is operating normally this morning.

Video from WBBM-TV shows the front wheels of SD70MACH No.  515 off the track near Canal Street, blocking one of the three tracks on the station’s north end. . The locomotive was on a departing Milwaukee West train derailed at Canal Street, blocking one of the three tracks departing from the station’s north end. There were no injuries; about 400 people were on board, according to Metra.

The commuter operator first reported “an operational incident” on its social media platforms about 5:20 p.m., saying “extensive delays” could be expected. Service was restored about 7:45 p.m., although the Milwaukee North feed on X.com continued to caution passengers that that trains could operate out of sequence, as expresses, or could be annulled because of the incident. As late as the Milwaukee North’s 11 p.m. departure from downtown, service was reported to be operating 40 to 50 minutes behind schedule.

Outbound Amtrak Hiawatha No. 341 and inbound Borealis No. 1340 were also delayed by the incident.
