TORONTO — Ontario provincial transit agency Metrolinx and Alstom have signed a five-year contract for Alstom to continue operation of GO Transit commuter trains, the parties announced today (March 20, 2026).
The operation and management contract runs through 2031 and is worth Ca$1.3 billion ($950 million U.S.), Alstom said. Alstom employs 1,300 workers in the Toronto operation.
“Whether it’s introducing new riders to transit during Toronto’s biggest special events, or helping ensure frequent riders have a reliable, high-quality experience every time, Alstom has been behind the scenes helping deliver for Metrolinx and its passengers,” Michael Keroullé, Alstom America president, said in a press release. “Our continued partnership with Metrolinx is a tribute to the excellence and experience of our local Services Team to ensure passengers needs are met safely and efficiently.”
Alstom has been GO Transit’s operator since its takeover of Bombardier’s rail division in 2021; Bombardier had been the operator since 2008. In fiscal 2024-25, Alstom maintained a 97% on-time rate in operating 117,020 GO Transit trains and 56,494 UP Express trips. The latter operation provides service between Toronto Union Station and the city’s Pearson Airport.
“This renewed agreement with Alstom delivers on our government’s plan to protect Ontario by ensuring Ontario tax dollars continue to support Ontario workers,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario minister of transportation. “It will strengthen the operations and maintenance capacity needed to support a more reliable GO Transit network as we expand service across the region to meet the needs of our growing province.”
GO Transit’s rail network spans seven lines, 70 stations, and 532 kilometers (331 miles). The full rail and bus network carried more than 79 million riders in 2025.
