WASHINGTON — Thirty-six members of California’s congressional delegation have asked the White House for some $2 billion in transit funding to support the 2028 Olympic and Paralymic Games.

“Like you, we collectively want to ensure that we have a safe, secure, efficient, and accessible transportation network in the Los Angeles mega-region for this global sporting event,” the legislators wrote in a letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. “We are convinced that delivering on this goal will require the full support of the federal government.”

The letter is signed by U.S. Sens. Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, as well as 34 of the state’s 52 members of the House of Representatives. U.S. Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, who represents a district west and southwest of downtown Los Angeles, led the effort. The letter says the funding will support the efforts of LA Metro and its regional transit partners.

“The lead time needed to plan for an event of the scale and scope of the 2028 games means that the President’s Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request will likely be the final opportunity to ensure that federal transportation funding can be made in available in a timely manner in advance of the Games,” the legislators wrote. The letter says some 15 million ticketholders from around the world are projected to attend, contributing $18 billion to the U.S. economy.
