EDMONTON, Alberta — Korean manufacturer Hyundai Rotem has signed a contract to build 32 light rail vehicles for the Edmonton Transit Service, its second order for Edmonton.

The contract was signed Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Edmonton, CTV News reports. Design will begin later this year with deliveries in 2029 and 2030. The trainsets are part of the expansion of Edmonton’s Metro and Capital lines; some will replace 45-year-old Siemens-built equipment currently in operation.

The Korea Times reports the order is worth $220.6 million. The new order, for high-floor trainsets, follows a 2021 deal worth $150 million for the manufacturer to build 46 low-floor LRVs for Edmonton’s Valley West Line. The first trainsets in that order were delivered last August.

The equipment will feature advanced climate control systems capable of maintaining interior conditions even in temperatures as low as minus-40 degrees (a temperature the same in Celsius or Fahrenheit). The trainsets will also feature a collision-warning system.

“Based on our experience in railway projects at home and abroad and cooperation with the local operator, we will seek to contribute to the safe and stable operation of the light-rail system,” a company official told the Korea Times.
