Genesee & Wyoming has unveiled the latest in a series of locomotives honoring America’s 250th anniversary — and the first in a modified paint scheme reflecting changes after two units were originally painted with a lighter blue as the primary color.
The Buffalo & Pittsburgh locomotive, C44-9W No. 4434, features a Liberty Bell design. It follows earlier locomotives highlighting the Statue of Liberty and a bald eagle.
Tom Ciuba, G&W’s vice president of communications, said in an email to Trains.com, ““ We set out to do something different and unique with our design focusing on specific American icons — like the Liberty Bell that you can now see on our Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad operations in Pennsylvania and the Statue of Liberty on our Providence & Worcester Railroad, since PW has haulage rights into New York City. All the icons that you’ll eventually see have been carefully chosen based on their location in relation to great events, people or symbols of American history.
“Once we painted the initial two engines, we took a step back and saw an opportunity to incorporate more traditional colors from the American flag alongside the icons. So, the majority of the commemorative engines will be of the newer design featured on BPRR.”
Additional locomotives will be released in the near future.
