FORT WORTH, Texas — A shelter-in-place order has been lifted for Fort Worth residents living near the site of a Union Pacific derailment today (Aug., 31, 2025), according to the Fort Worth Fire Department.
The Fire Department responded to the derailment at UP’s Davidson Yard southwest of downtown Fort Worth in about 10:40 a.m., and found that nine cars had derailed, with two leaking carbon dioxide, according to WFAA-TV. That led to a shelter-in-place order for those within a two-block radius “out of an abudance of caution,” KDFW-TV reports. The order was lifted in the afternoon.
No injuries were reported.
Carbon dioxide is considered “minimally toxic by inhalation,” according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. While it can lead to death by suffication in extreme concentrations, mild exposure can lead to headaches and drowsiness, while rapid breathing, confusion, and elevated blood pressure are among the risks of exposure at higher levels.
