PORT CLINTON, Pa. — The Reading & Northern Railroad has promoted Jim Raffa to chief marketing officer, the company has announced.

Raffa entered railroading as a trackman with R&N predecessor Blue Mountain & Reading in 1989, and after the Reading & Northern was formed in 1990, he became coal traffic manager and real estate manager. He left for an ownership position with the Lehigh Railway and Luzerne & Susquehanna Railway in 2007, but after the sale of those railroads in 2020, returned to R&N to manage petrochemical and mineral accounts. He also managed the railroad’s industrial development department.

In his new role, Raffa will continue to report to railroad President Wayne Michel. He will work with Michel, CEO Andy Muller Jr., and Executive Vice President Christina Muller-Levan on strategic and commercial issues including railroad acquisitions and the proposed Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern merger.

“Jim has done an amazing job in growing our frac sand business,” Muller said in a press release, “as he oversaw the creation and building of our Tunkhannock transload operation, which will handle over 4,000 carloads of sand this year. As we embark on expansion opportunities, including in Luzerne County, Jim is the perfect person to ensure that we offer exceptional service to the new Reading & Northern customers as well as continuing our focus on service to all our existing customers.”
