PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota’s State Railroad Board has approved the sale of two segments of state-owned trackage to Genesee & Wyoming’s Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad for $3.125 million.

The purchase was approved by a 4-0 vote at the board’s meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 21. It include 19.5 miles of track — the 15.3-mile Yale Rail Line, a branch off the RCP&E’s main line between Yale and Huron, S.D.; and 4.2 miles of track and associated land at the Wolsey Interchange, where the RCP&E connects with BNSF Railway. The RCP&E has been leasing and operating both properties.

The RCP&E had presented its offer to purchase the land at the board’s December meeting [see “Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern offers …,” Trains.com, Dec. 18, 2025].
