EAST WINDSOR, Conn. — After 30 years of operation on 14 miles of state-owned former New Haven Railroad track, Central New England Railroad operated its last train on the final day of 2025, as Genesee & Wyoming’s Connecticut Southern prepared to take over the line on Jan. 1, 2026. GP9 No. 3760 moved a single empty covered hopper 4 miles from the railroad’s yard at Scantic, Conn., to the interchange with the Connecticut Southern in East Windsor. Only these 4 miles are currently in service, although rails are still in place north to the Massachusetts state line. The railroad also once operated on 8 miles of track northwest of Hartford, dormant since its only customer relocated in 2021.

Wonder if a preservation and or tourist line is eyeing that retired RS-1 No. 30? Would look pretty cool refurbished and running again. Probably do well an an industrial lead or park.
It’s New Years Day, but what year? From the photo in this article, must be the year 1958.
Charles, the photo’s caption reads, “GP9 No. 3760 passes retired RS-1 No. 30 as the last Central New England Railroad train departs the railroad’s yard at Scantic, Conn., on Dec. 31, 2025.” But you are right, the picture does look like something out of 1958…
Happy New Years, Charles…
Except for that truck inside the fence…
