INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Eleven workers at the D&I Railroad have voted to join the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, the union has announced following certification of election results earlier this month by the National Mediation Board.
The BLET says it is the 14th short line where workers have voted to join the union since 2023.
The D&I — sometimes referred to as the Dakota & Iowa, although officially the initials are not an abbreviation — is a wholly owned subsidiary of aggregates firm L.G. Everist Inc. It operates between Dell Rapids, S.D., and Sioux City, Iowa, on its own trackage and via trackage rights on BNSF Railway.
The D&I workers will now begin the process of negotiating their first-ever union contract.
