The commission announced the grants, approved at a Jan. 22 meeting, on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

The Ann Arbor funding will go toward a $240,000 grade crossing rehabilitation project at Chrysler Avenue on the spur serving the Jeep plant in Toledo. The money to AluChem, a producer of the ceramic alumina, will be applied to a $150,000 project to reactivate a second track at the company’s facility in Jackson, Ohio.

The commission also approved funding for Ohio Operation Lifesaver’s 2026 Education Grant. That funding will be used for a safety campaign on WKYC-TV in Cleveland from July to September, which will include public service announcements during the evening news and on the station’s streaming app, as well as display adds on WKYC.com.

“The projects approved by the Rail Commission illustrate these companies’ commitment to safety and demonstrate the importance of rail service to Ohio companies,” Matthew Dietrick, executive director of the commission, said in a press release. “Promoting safe and efficient rail operations is critical to our mission, so we are happy to partner with these companies who share that goal.”
