
WASHINGTON — U.S. rail traffic rebounded slightly in the week ending Sept. 27, 2025, showing a 1% gain over the same week a year earlier, according to the Association of American Railroads.
Traffic for the week included 512,642 carloads and intermodal units, including 228,903 carloads (a gain of 0.9% over the same week in 2024) and 283,739 intermodal units (up 1.1%).
The gains came after three straight weeks with traffic below previous-year levels, including a 2.2% drop the previous week.
Through 39 weeks, the year-to-date volume of 19,225,976 carloads and intermodal units represents a 2.9% over the same period in 2024. The overall figure includes 8,652,275 carloads, a gain of 2.1%, and 10,573,701 intermodal units, up 3.5%.
North American traffic for the week ending Sept. 27, as reported by nine U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, was 708,291 carloads and intermodal units, a gain of 0.8%. The 336,303 carloads represent a 0.6% decline from the same week in 2024, while the 371,988 intermodal units represent a 2.2% increase.
Year-to-date traffic for North Americais 26,457,452 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.3% from the first 39 weeks of 2024. That includes 6,307,357 carloads and intermodal units in Canada, a gain of 2.1%, and 924,119 carloads and intermodal units in Mexico, a decline of 7.1%.
