HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Approximately two dozen cars of a Union Pacific freight train derailed early Monday (Nov. 3) in Hutchinson, sending auto racks down an embankment and closing one lane of a state highway.

The derailment occurred about 1 a.m. The Hays Post reports that the railroad said in a statement that there were no injuries or hazardous material releases.

One northbound lane of Kansas Route 61 remains closed until further notice between 17th and 39th avenues to allow for the movement of heavy equipment for cleanup efforts the city of Hutchinson said in a social media post.

Hutchinson is on UP’s Herrington Subdivision, about 30 miles west of McPherson, Kan., and about 245 miles southwest of Kansas City, Mo.
