HAMLET, N.C. — Two CSX trains collided on Saturday, March 14, in Hamlet, leading to the derailment of 18 cars and one locomotive. No injuries were reported.
The incident occurred about 10:29 a.m. on Saturday near Louis Breeden Boulevard in Hamlet, the railroad said in a statement. The derailed locomotive lost a small quantity of diesel fuel that was quickly contained. A photo on the Richmond Observer website shows the locomotive among some trees on an embankment.
“CSX crews are currently on the scene and working as safely and quickly as possible to clean up the impacted site,” the railroad said. “CSX appreciates the swift response of local emergency personnel. The cause of the incident is under investigation.”
