MONTGOMERY, Ala. — HD Hyundai Power Transformers USA, a CSX-served facility in Montgomery, on March 6 held groundbreaking for a $200 million plant expansion expected to be completed in mid-2027 and support 600 jobs.

The expansion will allow HD-HPT to manufacture larger electrical transformers and increases the company’s total investment in Montgomery to $277 million since it first established operations there in 2011.

“CSX has been a longstanding partner to HD Hyundai Power Transformers and the Montgomery community,” Christina Bottomley, CSX vice president of business development and real estate, said in a press release. “As this project moves forward, our team is working closely with CSX’s Clearance Bureau, which specializes in the logistics of complex, dimensional moves, to help HD-HPT further strengthen its supply chain, support regional growth, and advance the reliability of the nation’s power grid.”

Rashard Howard, the railroad’s director of business development, represented CSX at the event and noted the importance of collaboration in such large-scale infrastructure projects.

“State and local partnerships are essential to moving transformational projects from vision to reality,” Howard said. “By working alongside our customer, community leaders, and economic development partners, we’re delivering solutions that drive investment, create jobs, and support long-term growth for our railroad.”

HD-HPT now supplies more than 15% of U.S. large core-type transformers. The company is a Homeland Security essential employer, with its work tied directly to national infrastructure protection and grid security.

“This expansion reflects our long-term confidence in Montgomery and the State of Alabama,” Jinho Kang, president of HD-HPT, said in a press release. “… The collaboration between state and local leaders, economic development partners, and workforce training organizations made this growth possible — and continues to position us for long-term success.”
