At least 11 passenger trains affected by coal train derailment near Enfield, N.C.

CSX logoENFIELD, N.C. — Twenty-eight cars of a CSX loaded CSX coal train derailed Sunday afternoon (Aug. 17, 2025) north of Rocky Mount, N.C., bringing extensive disruptions to Amtrak service as well as freight operations.

No injuries were reported, and a CSX representative told WRAL-TV that no waterways had been affected and there was “no threat to the surrounding community.”

At least 11 Amtrak trains have been canceled all or in part because of the derailment, according to the Amtrak Alerts and Amtrak Northeast social media feeds. The  southbound Floridian scheduled to depart Chicago on Sunday was canceled, as was the train scheduled to arrive in Miami today south of Washington, D.C. The Floridian scheduled to leave Miami today has also been cancelled. Other cancellations today (Aug. 18) include  both directions of the Silver Meteor and Auto Train; both directions of the Carolinian between New York and Raleigh, N.C., and both direction of the Palmetto between Washington and Savannah, Ga.

The derailment occurred about 4 p.m. at the Franklin Street outside of the town of Enfield, about 20 miles north of Rocky Mount on CSX’s North End Subdivision. Federal Railroad Administration grade-crossing data from 2024 indicates the crossing sees about 26 trains per day.

CSX, in a customer advisory today, said it is temporarily rerouting trains around the derailment and that delays may occur. It does not yet have an estimate for restoration of service. It said the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
