Steve Smedley, of Atlanta, Ill., retired after working almost 40 years as a photojournalist for The Pantagraph and prior to that the Peoria
Journal Star. Smedley is a lifelong railroad fan that enjoys covering a variety of operations in Central Illinois. Putting the time into photographing an operation and covering a short line visually has led him to lifelong friendships with many railroad workers. He photographs everything — track structure, signals, employees, stations, and the details — not just locomotives.
