
WASHINGTON — U.S. carload and intermodal traffic were both up during the week ending March 7, 2026, the Association of American Railroads reports.
AAR figures show traffic for the week was 514,996 carloads and intermodal units, an overall increase of 3.5% compared to the same week in 2025. That includes 231,889 carloads, a gain of 5.7%, and 283,107 containers and railers, an increase of 1.8%.
Through nine weeks of 2026, U.S. rail volume is 4,468,601 carloads and intermodal units, up 2% from the same period a year ago. The 1,994,393 carloads to date represent a 5.5% increase, while the 2,474,208 intermodal units are a decline of 0.7%.
North American volume for the week, from nine reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, included 337,025 carloads, up 4.6% from the same week last year, and 371,354 intermodal units, up 3.7%. The total of 708,379 carloads and intermodal units is an increase of 4.1%. For the year to date, North American volume is 6,150,558 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.7% from the first nine weeks of 2025.
In Canada, volume for the week included 91,046 carload, down 0.1%, and 73,037 intermodal units, up 3.5% from the corresponding week in 2025. For the year to date, the volume of 1,438,199 carloads and intermodal units is an increase of 2.4%.
In Mexico, railroads reported volume of 14,090 carloads, up 21.2% from the same week last year, and 15,210 intermodal units, up 56.9%. The nine-week total for Mexico is 243,758 carloads and intermodal units, up 19.1% from a year ago.
