Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority logoPHILADELPHIA — Regional Rail service will return to its normal schedules, including morning express trains, on Monday, Jan. 12, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority has announced.

The move comes as more of the agency’s Silverliner IV railcars, sidelined for repairs since a federal emergency order was issued in October, are returning to service.

“This is a major step toward restoring normal service on Regional Rail,” SEPTA General Manager Scott A. Sauer said in a press release. “The return of morning express trips will optimize all service by enabling us to more efficiently serve high-volume stations, which will reduce crowding and resulting delays and pass-ups on local trains.”

While evening express trains resumed in November, more cars were needed before the morning express trains could resume, SEPTA says. As a result, some 24 morning trips across six major Regional Rail routes were converted from express to all-stop local service. With the return of express service, some morning trains will bypass stations they have served since October; the agency advices passengers to check schedules, available here, to be familiar with the changes.

While work on the Silverliner IV fleet continues, repairs had been completed on 180 of the 223 cars as of Friday, Jan. 9.

The service disruptions date to the Oct. 1 Federal Railroad Administration order stemming from a series of fires involving the Silverliner IV equipment earlier in 2025 [see “FRA issues an emergency order …,” Trains.com, Oct. 2, 2025]. The Silverliner IV electrical multiple-unit cars represent about two-thirds of the Regional Rail fleet.
