Surface Transportation Board logoWASHINGTON — The Surface Transportation Board has renewed the charter of its Passenger Rail Advisory Committee, the group created to assist the board on issues related to passenger service.

The board announced creation of the committee in 2023 and selected 21 members from a group of 90 nominees for the first version of the board in March 2024 [see “STB names 21 …,” Trains.com, March 28, 2024].

Members include representatives of Amtrak, Class I and shortline freight railroads, passenger advocacy groups, states that host various types of Amtrak service, commuter rail, labor, shippers, and at-large members. The group, which meets at least twice a year, held its first meeting that October [see “STB Passenger Rail …,” Oct. 23, 2024]. Meetings are open to the public.

The committee provides advice and recommendations on matters including on-time performance of passenger trains; Amtrak access to facilities of host carriers, and compensation for that access; and disputes involving joint use of facilities and cost allocation. A decision released Tuesday (Dec. 16) says the board “has determined that the continuation of the committee is in the public interest and has therefore renewed the charter for an additional two years.”
