CPKC derailment in British Columbia leads to evacuation, emergency order

CPKC logoCRANBROOK, British Columbia — A state of emergency was declared and five properties were evacuated today (Saturday, Nov. 29) near Cranbrook after the derailment 12 cars of a CPKC train, including some propane tank cars.

The news site Castanet reports the derailment occurred about 7 a.m. CPKC told Castanet there were no injuries. The railroad said some of the cars were carrying wood products; it did not specify the number of tank cars involved.

The emergency declaration from the Regional District of East Kootenay says the derailment poses “an existing or imminent threat to people and property.” The director of the district’s emergency operations center said the evacuation was ordered “out of an abundance of caution. … Without having all full details, we wanted to make sure that the residents in the immediate area were safe.”

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said it has deployed investigators to the scene.

The location of the incident was described as a remote area about 16 kilometers (10 miles) east of Cranbrook. It is on CPKC’s Cranbrook Subdivision, about 35 miles north of the border with Montana.
