KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former official of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen local in Kansas City, Mo., has pleaded guilty to embezzling almost $55,000 from the union.
David L. Scofield, 65, of Independence, Mo., is the former recording financial secretary of BRS Local Lodge 21. On Tuesday (Nov. 25), he pleaded guilty to U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Bough of charges of four counts of bank fraud, one count of embezzlement theft of labor union funds, and one count of falsification of a union’s annual financial report.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri said in a press release that, as recording secretary, Scofield had access to the Local Lodge 21 bank account, and by pleading guilty, admitted to using that account for $54,412.67 in personal activity, including loans, credit cards, and payment of his PayPal account. He must repay that amount and faces a sentence of up to 30 years in prison without parole. His sentencing hearing is set for March 31, 2026.
