PORT CLINTON, Pa. — The Reading & Northern Railroad has repainted one of its locomotives to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026.
SD40-2 No. 3061, repainted and renumbered to No. 1776, was unveiled on Nov. 11, Veterans’ Day. The flag-based scheme, with its red-and-white striped long hood, blue cab, and 13 stars on the nose, was designed by Evan Kerr, a six-year employee of the railroad as a conductor, engineer, and dispatcher. “This engine is one of the most beautiful and passionate projects ever taken on by the paint shop,” Paint Department Manager Zach Frye said in a press release. “Our crew of five people was able turn this engine into a masterpiece in just one month’s time.”
With the R&N passenger department planning special events around the Semiquincentennial, the railroad says the locomotive could see duty in excursion service next year.

Great job to all involved. I like the more simplified lines on the unit.
