PROVIDENCE FORGE, Va. — No injuries were reported as two locomotives and 15 cars of a CSX coal train derailed today (Saturday, Oct. 25) in New Kent County, Va., near the unincorporated community of Providence Forge.

The New Kent County Sheriff’s Office first reported the incident on social media about 3:10 p.m., reporting that coal had been spilled into the wetlands area at the site. The Sheiff’s Office said the only road affected by the incident was Barnetts Road in Charles City County.

The derailment led to the cancellation of two Amtrak Northeast Regional trains, Nos. 99 and 124, between Richmond and Newport News, Va. Amtrak said on its NEC Alerts social media feed that it was seeking to arrange a bus substation.

The derailment site is about 22 miles east of Richmond, Va., on CSX’s Peninsula Subdivision.
