DALLAS — Ceremonies to open Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s Silver Line, the 26-mile commuter rail line connecting DFW International Airport and Plano, will begin on Thursday, Oct. 23, with a broad range of community events set for Saturday, Oct. 25, when the line opens to the public.
Two invitation-only events — a ribbon-cutting at the University of Texas-Dallas on Thursday, and a ceremony for government officials, dignitaries, and project partners on Oct. 24 — will precede the launch of service on Saturday. That day, community events will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at each station in the seven communities on the Silver Line route: Grapevine (DFW Terminal B, DFW Airport North), Cypress Waters (Coppell), Downtown Carrollton, Addison, Dallas (Knoll Trail), Richardson (UT Dallas, CityLine/Bush), and Plano (12th Street, Shiloh Road).
Most sites will include family-friendly games and activities, food trucks and small-business vendors, tours of the Stadler trainsets, and giveaways; details on additional events at specific sites are available here. There will also be morning ribbon-cutting ceremonies at four stations: Cypress Waters (8:25 a.m.), Carrollton (8:45 a.m.), Addison (9 am.), and CityLine/Bush (9:30 a.m.) The day will conclude with a free concert by the Jakarta Band at Plano’s 12th Street station from 6 to 9 p.m.
The entire DART system will be fare-free on Saturday to mark the launch of the Silver Line; Silver Line service will remain free through Nov. 8.
The Silver Line, built on a former Cotton Belt route, will connect with three DART light rail lines at four stations — the Orange Line at DFW Terminal B, the Green Line at Downtown Carrollton; and the Red Line at CityLine/Bush and 12th Street. It also connects with Trinity Metro’s TEXRail commuter line at the two DFW stations; a connection to Denton County’s A-Train is available one stop from Downtown Carrollton on the Green Line.
More information about the Silver Line is available here.
