ATLANTA — Norfolk Southern’s Digital Train Inspection (DTI) portals have been recognized in Fast Company’s 2025 Innovation by Design Awards, receiving an honorable mention in the Artificial Intelligence Design category.
It’s the first time a railroad has earned a spot in the business technology magazine’s annual awards.
“This recognition highlights how our innovation is transforming rail safety,” Anil Bhatt, NS chief information and digital officer, said in a statement. “DTI portals are a powerful example of how technology and human expertise come together to keep our network safe and reliable. By applying advanced AI and machine vision, we’re reimagining long-standing processes, enhancing safety, and making a lasting impact for our customers and communities.”
Developed in partnership with Georgia Tech Research Institute, the portals use machine vision to conduct railcar inspections. Equipped with trackside cameras and stadium lighting, the portals capture about 1,000 ultra-high-resolution, 360-degree images of each passing railcar. Homebuilt artificial intelligence algorithms then analyze the images for defects, transmitting results to the railroad’s Network Operations Center in Atlanta, where experts review the data and proactively address issues.
Trains can be scanned at up to 70 mph, with improved accuracy providing earlier detection of defects.
CSX installed inspection portals several years before NS did. I wonder what the differences are, apparently enough for NS to get an award.
