Clarence Monin, former BLE president, dies at 84

Railroader who began career with Louisville & Nashville served as union’s international president from 1996 to 1998

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Former Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers International President Clarence V. Monin has died, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen has announced.

Morin, 84, died on June 26. He held the union’s highest office from 1996 to 1998.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Monin family in their time of loss,” BLET National President Mark Wallace said in a statement. The BLE came the BLET in 2004.

Monin began his railroad career as a trainman on the Lousiville & Nashville in 1964, becoming an engineer in October 1966, when he joined the BLE. He also serviced as international vice president from 1985 to 1991 and first vice president from 1991 to 1996. In later years, he was a founding member of the Railroad Worker Benefit Foundation, which provides aid and assistant to railroad workers who suffer career-ending injuries. He retired in 2000.

He is survived by his wife, Lyra; the mother of his three children, Gayle Monin; three children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, as well as sisters Joyce Jordan, Linda Lee, and Judy Johnson. A full obituary is available here.
