CSX logoGREENCASTLE, Ind. — Cleanup continues more than 20 cars of a CSX train derailed Tuesday night (July 8, 2025) in Greencastle, Ind.

The derailment was reported to first responders about 8 p.m.  Putnam County Emergency Management Director Sarah Owen told the Putnam County Post that there were no injuries, no hazardous materials involved, and the derailed cars remained up right. An aerial image on the WIXN-TV website indicates the cars involved were auto racks; a Facebook post from the Greencastle Fire Department indicates railroad personnel will be in the area “for an extended period” for cleanup and repairs.

Greencastle is about 40 miles west of Indianapolis on CSX’s St. Louis Line.

  1. Looking at the pictures from the news site, this is the part of the Greencastle Bypass that was built by the NYC in 1926. The railroad passing under is the former Monon mainline from New Albany to East Chicago, cut back at Cloverdale, Indiana to maintain service for a Martin Marietta quarry.

Just below the pictures shown is a switch for a yard north of town, where CSX stores lime byproducts from the Buzzi Unichem plant south of town on a former Pennsy siding, and aggregates brought up from Cloverdale.

I would take a guess that a auto rack got fouled in that yard switch north of town and it just took a long time to get train stopped as the EOT appears to be past the switch control.
