Rail traffic continues to remain above last year’s levels

Intermodal and carload traffic grew compared to the same week last year

WASHINGTON – U.S. rail traffic was up 5% for the week ending July 5 compared to the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads reported on Wednesday.

For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 443,049 carloads and intermodal units, up 5% compared with the same week last year.
Total carloads were up 4.8% compared with the same week in 2024, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was up 5.2 percent compared to 2024.

Eight of the 10 carload commodity groups posted an increase compared with the same week in 2024. They included metallic ores and metals; coal; and nonmetallic minerals. Commodity groups that posted decreases compared with the same week in 2024 were forest products; and farm products excluding grain and food.

For the first 27 weeks of 2025, U.S. railroads reported cumulative volume of 5,910,080 carloads, up 2.5% from the same point last year; and 7,221,865 intermodal units, up 5.1% from last year. Total combined U.S. traffic for the first 27 weeks of 2025 was 13,131,945 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 3.9% compared to last year.

North American rail volume for the week nine reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads totaled 301,800 carloads, up 2.2% compared with the same week last year, and 323,164 intermodal units, up 6.9% compared with last year. Total combined weekly rail traffic in North America was up 4.6 percent. North American rail volume for the first 27 weeks of 2025 was up 2.8% compared with 2024.

Canadian railroads reported an 8.3% decline in carload volume for the week, and a 10.8% gain in intermodal traffic. For the first 27 weeks of 2025, Canadian railroads reported cumulative rail traffic volume of 4,394,093 carloads, containers and trailers, up 1.2%.

Mexican railroads reported carloads up 40.9% compared with the same week last year, while intermodal units were up 21%. Cumulative volume on Mexican railroads for the first 27 weeks of 2025 was down 7.5% from the same point last year.
