NEWARK, N.J. — With roadwork completed, NJ Transit will end its temporary discount fare program for passengers affected by emergency repairs on Interstate 80 as of Monday, June 30, the agency has announced.
Sinkholes that developed along the highway led to extended lane closures for repairs, leading NJ Transit to offer 50% discounts for travelers at five stations west of the construction zone: Hackettstown, Mount Olive, Netcong, Lake Hopatcong, and Mount Arlington [see “NJ Transit cuts fares …,” Trains News Wire, March 22, 2025].
All work on I-80 is now complete. According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, all westbound lanes were reopened as of June 14, 11 days ahead of schedule, while all eastbound lanes reopened June 21, four days ahead of schedule.
I have heard that sinkhole problems can often reappear after being filled in, sometimes sooner, other times later. Hope the Roads Dept will keep a close watch on these areas.
