•MANUFACTURERS: Alco, Baldwin, Lima, Canadian, Montreal, a few homemade

•OPERATED ON: Every North American railroad

•NAME: Mikado

•QUANTITY: 10,000; New York Central had almost 1,400

•BOILER PRESSURE: 190-200 psi

•KNOWN FOR: Well-designed, smooth-running engine used mostly in freight service and some in passenger service.

•STATUS: Some in museums and some are operating, including Southern Railway 4501 in Tennessee, Soo Line 1003 in Wisconsin, Grand Canyon Railway 4960 in Arizona, among others

  1. The first USRA light Mikado is at the B&O Museum in Baltimore. Thankfully, it is under cover and will be restored some day by their restoration shop as funds allow.
