WOODSTOWN, N.J. — On Saturday, Sept. 20, steam locomotive No. 9 of the Woodstown Central Railroad will re-debut to the public, following an extensive period of repairs. In April, the Alco-built 0-6-0 was sidelined by an overheated journal on its central axle during an excursion, necessitating repairs beyond the capabilities of the tourist railroad’s South Woodstown, N.J., shop [“Woodstown Central steam locomotive sidelined” May 1].
With the work complete, No. 9 is poised to lead an arrangement of historic freight cars, an open-air gondola, and a restored caboose. Round-trips from Woodstown to Swedesboro will depart at noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. The event coincides with Woodstown Central’s First Responders Day by honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders who will enjoy a special ticket price of $5. Proceeds will benefit local charities.
Former Reading Co. FP7 No. 903 will also make its debut alongside sister No. 902, which was pressed into service in May. Both locomotives are scheduled to tag-team on the passenger excursion, following the same route as the No. 9 but departing at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.
