ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Virginia Railway Express will eliminate fares for riders 18 and under as part of fare adjustments effective July 1.

Adult passengers on the commuter service will see a fare increase of approximately 5%, the first raise in ticket prices since 2019. That will translate to an increase of approximately 65 cents for the longest single ride — from Spotsylvania, Va., to Washington Union Station — or $18 for a monthly pass. Fares for travel between zone 1 (Union Station and L’Enfant), zone 2 (Crystal City and Alexandria), and zone 3 (Franconia-Springfield and Backlick Road) is a flat $5 fare.

The free youth travel requires a valid school ID for those ages 11-18 when traveling alone. Those 10 and under must always be accompanied by a fare-paying adult, and all those 18 and under need no ID when accompanied by a fare-paying adult.
