NJ Transit gets funds for major station projects

Camden, Newark, Hoboken projects all receive financial support

NJ Transit logoTRENTON, N.J. — Three of NJ Transit’s busiest stations will receive more than $600 million for renovations and upgrades as part of $814 million in capital funding added to the New Jersey budget for fiscal 2023.

NJ.com reports that the budget includes $250 million for replacement and expansion of the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden, a project announced in 2021 [see “Digest: Camden, N.J., transit center to get $250 million makeover,” Trains News Wire, Feb. 18, 2021]; $191 million for continuing work on Newark Penn Station, announced in 2020 [see “Digest: Newark Penn Station to receive …,” News Wire, Dec. 9, 2020]; and $176 million for work at Hoboken Terminal, a project accompanying redevelopment plans in the station area.

Other stations to receive work include New Brunswick on the Northeast Corridor, slated for $49 million in work; Brick Church ($33 million) and Bloomfield ($48 million) on the Morris & Essex lines; and Roselle Park on the Raritan Valley Line ($27 million). The money will come the New Jersey Debt Defeasance and Prevention Fund, created by the state legislature for specific NJ Transit projects.
