CASTEJON DE EBRO, Spain — One of the oldest surviving Alco World Series locomotives has been returned to passenger service.
Locomotive No. 1603, one of 17 FPD5/DL500A models built by Alco in the U.S. and delivered to Spanish Railways (RENFE) in 1955, is operating after an overhaul completing a 17-year restoration project. The locomotive has been bought by Spanish rail tour and charter company ALSA, which funded completion of the project. ALSA also owns two DL500T locomotives built in Spain in the mid-1960s under license from Alco.
The engine handled its first passenger train since the early 1980s on Nov. 10-11, handling a tour train in northern Spain organized by British rail touring company PTG Tours, which normally organizes at least one Alco-powered tour in Spain each year.
is this a PA or an FA?
Is it time form Trains to do a roundup of other DL500’s still operational around the world.
ALCo forever!
Cool! Grandad worked at Alco in Schenectady 🙂
