DURANGO,Colo. — The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad will resume service to Silverton, cut off last season by a bridge washout, on May 22, as part of its summer-fall 2021 schedule, with shorter Cascade Canyon Express excursions on May 1. The railroad announced it will operate one train daily to Silverton May 22 to Oct. 1, with three of the shorter Cascade Canyon trips daily from May 1 to Nov. 7.

“The D&SNGRR is ready to safely and warmly welcome families and vacationers to the Four Corners region with a comprehensive slate of excursions and flexible riding options for the summer of 2021, and we’re even more excited to resume daily passenger service to Silverton in late May after navigating and overcoming several challenges last year,” said Allen C. Harper, head of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and chairman and chief executive officer of American Heritage Railways, in a press release.

The Silverton trips will depart from Durango at 9 a.m. and return at 6:15 p.m., and will have limited capacity because of COVID-19 measures. Coach fares are $99 for adults and $65 for children under the age of 12, while open-air gondola fares are $104 for adults and $70 for children. Deluxe-class fares are $124 for adults and $119 for children; a variety of first-class options are also available at $194 or $224 for adults and children. Prospector car first-class tickets are $194 for children.

The two-hour Cascade Canyon trips will depart from the railroad’s Rockwood station, 20 miles north of Durango, at 9 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 3:15 p.m. Coach fares are $81 for adults and $57 for children; open-air gondola fares are $86 for adults and $62 for children. More information is available at the railroad website.

  1. I agree, the old format was a lot easier to use. We hope to try out the handicap facilities and ride to Silverton this summer. Last time we were there we did not need that but times change and we are now limited to activities that are accessible to wheelchairs. They say they have a wheelchair option so we will find out. It is such a beautiful ride that we want to do it again.
