Don Colangelo, Genesee Valley’s ‘Alco doc,’ retires

Veteran railroader oversaw fleet that grew to more than 50 locomotives

SCRANTON, Pa. — Don Colangelo, the Genesee Valley Transportation vice president, mechanical, who gained renown as the “Alco doc” for keeping the company’s fleet of American Locomotive Co. diesels healthy, is retiring this month.

Colangelo spent some four decades in railroad, more than 25 of those with Genesee Valley, which saw its fleet of Alco locomotives grow from 10 to more than 50. and the company says in a press release that he “set the standard for maintaining Alcos. … The entire GVT team would like to wish Don a long and happy retirement. His insight, camaraderie, and vast knowledge will be greatly missed.”

Genesee Valley, based in Batavia, N.Y., operates five short line and regional railroads in New York and Pennsylvania.

  1. Sorry I didn’t get the chance to stop by in person and thank him for all the help with ALCo mechanical questions over the years. Wishing the “Doc” all the best in retirement.
