The two Santa Clarita, Calif., residents, friends since 1963, are noted for color photography in the 1950s and 1960s, when most photographers were using black and white film. The Center notes their collections will significantly increase its holdings related to California and the U.S. Southwest.

Gildersleeve began railroad photography in 1948 and began shooting color images in 1950. His photos have been featured in more than 70 books, as well as magazines and calendars. He was honored with the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society’s Fred A. and Jane R. Stindt Photography Award in 2014.

Glattenberg, born in Los Angeles in 1937, has photographed railroads and airliners since 1955, with images included in numerous books and publications, and has traveled to 45 countries and all 50 states. He and Gildersleeve, along with the late William (Hank) Mills, co-authored the 2018 book Southland, a 250-page, full-color publication on railways in Southern California during the Kodachrome era.
