KAHNAWAKE, Quebec — Canadian Pacific has obtained an injunction to remove a blockade from Adirondack Junction, south of Montreal near the Mohawk community of Kanhawake.
The Montreal Gazette reports the injunction was granted earlier today by a Quebec superior court judge. In addition to disrupting freight service, commuter train service on the route has been halted since Feb. 10. The move comes a day after police in Ontario enforced an injunction to end a blockade on Canadian National tracks near Belleville, Ont., that had been blocked since Feb. 6.
There was no immediate word on the status of the injunction. The head of the Kanhawake Mohawk Peacekeepers has previously said he would not enforce an injunction against his own people.
The Gazette also reports 14 people were arrested late Monday at a blockade of CN tracks near Smithers, British Columbia, according to a leader of the Gitxsan Nation, which organized the protest. The number of arrests had previously been unknown. Hereditary Chief Spookwx said all 14 demonstrators have been released.
