NKP 765 storms along at Cuyahoga Valley in 2018. The engine’s deadhead move today was cut short 30 miles out.

NEW HAVEN, Ind. — Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 No. 765 left home this morning for its annual fall gig at Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad but reversed course after 30 miles on Norfolk Southern when the left front trailing truck hub liner began running hot. The problem was described as neither critical nor severe and would be fixed within hours.

A realignment was not possible on the road, so the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society elected to return to the shop, says Vice President Kelly Lynch. The engine had been converted to roller bearings recently.

“With a long day ahead of us we opted just to back up and adjust it in our shop,” he said in a text. “We had originally planned to turn the engine one day and then make the trek to the Valley the next, and it looks like that’s how it’ll all turn out.”

No new schedule for the deadhead was available.

No. 765 is set to run at Cuyahoga Valley Sept. 21-22 and 27-29. Details: www.cvsr.com

  1. PFFT!! With a bit of work NKP 765 will be back out on the road. At least they caught it before it became a catastrophic failure.
