CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 will depart Cheyenne on Sept. 27 for its fall tour that will cover much of the southwest and southern U.S. served by the UP.

The railroad on Wednesday released operating and display dates through Oct. 22 and said the full schedule will be released later in the month. UP says the tour will cover Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Wyoming. Sources say the tour will cover almost 5,000 miles.

The primary objective for the fall tour is the Oct. 12-13 from West Colton, Calif., to Barstow, Calif., across Cajon Pass. Tickets are on sale for that event at the RailGiants Museum website.

A map at www.upsteam.com shows the train following the Overland Route to Ogden, then south via Las Vegas, east on the former Southern Pacific to El Paso, Texas, for an extended break that lasts through Oct. 31. From there, the train goes east to Houston, north to Little Rock and Kansas City and then west to Denver on UP’s Kansas Pacific routes before returning home to Cheyenne sometime in November.

  1. Figures that they would miss Louisiana. Only time they brought a steam locomotive here was when 8444 (then numbered) was an exhibit at the 1984 World Fair. Since then. Nothing.
You would think that a state that contributes heavily to its bottom line because of the Petrochemical industry would get a visit once in a while.

  2. Regarding the 4014 Fall tour in Sept, there is an old maritime superstition that you never start a voyage on a Friday.

  3. Why is it always referred to as a West Colton to Barstow tour if its westbound. Does this mean it will deadhead all the way from Cheyenne to West Colton, then backtrak back to Barstow with the tour, and deadhead back to West Coltron again before heading east?
