GAVIOTA, Calif. — Suspensions to Pacific Surfliner and Coast Starlight service will continue until at least Tuesday, Jan. 13, because of a washout near Gaviota, Calif.

According to the Pacific Surfliner website, Union Pacific anticipates reopening the tracks north of Santa Barbara on Jan. 13. In the meantime, the two daily Surfliner round trips to San Luis Obispo are suspended north of Goleta, although Amtrak Connection can provide service north of Santa Barbara. Amtrak’s website shows the Coast Starlight remains cancelled in both directions between Los Angeles and Emeryville, Calif., today (Jan. 11) and Monday, Jan. 12.

Service has been halted since Jan. 6 after an incident involving an excavator clearing debris that fell into an eroded area [see “Worker injured, tracks closed …,” Trains.com, Jan. 6, 2025].
