Transcontinental completion redux
At the Golden Spike National Historic Site in Promontory, Utah, two replica steam locomotives built in 1979 recreate the historic meeting of Central Pacific's Jupiter and Union Pacific No. 119 at the completion of the first transcontinental railroad, May 10, 1869. The site, a division of the National Park Service, is open year-round, although locomotive re-enactments occur between May and October. Matt Van Hattem photo
