Update on Kimm's Kanyon

After 7 weeks of soldering on the Uncle Tom's Stairway (real Yellowstone landmark), 3 weeks to carve the hoodoos in the last canyon wall, 2 weeks of painting, and a week to make some trees and bushes, I have progress to show. I have also been watching the coments on photos and have decided that its easy to make OK pics, but good ones are hard, and beyond me. Anyway, a few shots of the Kanyon at 3/4 finished. The stream is next and then all the little details.

 As of a while back

As of tonight

It's amazing how you achieve height and depth in a model.  You do a great job a capturing the majesty of North America.   Good Job!Bow [bow]

WOW! Impressive to say the least.  What a great scene.  I have been wondering how it was coming as I haven't seen anything posted on it for a while.  I would say you have been a bit busy.

Amazing!  I'm sure you have posted the details of the stairs, but what did you make it out of?

Detailing the rock faces... I'm just figuring out difficult it is to put scenery on a sheer cliff!

WOW!!!Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup].

Beautiful job capturing the look of the similar prototypes - Yosemite, Zion, Bryce Canyon...  I love the staircase - but you'd never catch me on the real one!  At that altitude, I prefer to have an aircraft wrapped around me.

Keep up the great work!

Wow! Simply breathtaking!! I'm really impressed with your work, especially the "floor to ceiling" scenery. It reminds me of John Allen's G&D. Can't wait to see how the stream will come out. Please keep us posted....

Have Fun....
Bob.

Great work Art, I have been wondering how your canyon was comming along, I almost PM you yesterday and ask you about it. I have to agree with some of the others I would never get on the staircase, for one thing I am way to big LOL, and another, I don't like hights, Made me dizzy looking at it.  Beautiful work!    Mike

Majestic and breathtaking view you have created and even with an artist plying his craft to capture the grandeur of the scene too!

Looking forward to seeing more.

Yep truly great work Art ! Bow [bow]

A couple of questions

Why do the stairs appear blue in some places and black in others ?

Why did they build the stairs in the first place ?

Re: Update on Kimm's Kanyon

The owner of the railroad paints everything blue. His son, who works for Valspar, got him a good deal on a tanker load of blue paint. The stairway has rusted more than the bridge, thus the red and tan. The prototype was painted silver/blue and rusted about like the model. The stairway is made out of wood, .028 brass wire and etched brass diamond stock. It was a crash course in soldering.

The long range pic will have to wait until the rest of the greenery and the stream is done.

I built the stairs because the prototype for the whole layout is my memories and places I gave been.

Here are a couple of pics I took of the prototype Uncle Tom's Stairway in Yellowstone. The light was bad at the time and I was not yet back in modeling so I didn't care at the time.
